Want to sew a square but don’t have a rotary cutter or cutting mat? Worried that you can’t cut the strips straight? Ask Agusta and she will send you the fixings.

  • Step One

Cut two 2” wide strips in white.
Cut one 2” strip in a darker color.
Cut another 2” strip or just a single 2” square in a third color.

  • Step Two

From the strips cut the following pieces:
    Two 2” dark pieces
    One 2” other color
Two 5” strips white, two dark
Two 8” strips white, two dark
    Two 11” strips white

  • Step Three

Sew the 2”squares together using a quarter inch seam allowance. Iron the seams flat pushing away from the center.

  • Step Four

Sew the 5” white strips to the top and bottom using a quarter inch seam allowance. Iron the seams flat.

  • Step Five

Sew the 5” dark strips to the sides using a quarter inch seam allowance. Iron the seams flat.

  • Step Six

Sew the 8” white strips to the top and bottom using a quarter inch seam allowance. Iron the seams flat.

  • Step Seven

Sew the 8” dark strips to the sides using a quarter inch seam allowance. Iron the seams flat.

  • Step Eight

Sew the 11” white strips to the top and bottom using a quarter inch seam allowance. Iron the seams flat.

  • Step Nine

Square the block up to 10”. If you don’t have a cutting mat and rotary cutter you can use a triangle and a ruler to mark your block and cut off the excess. If you are making many blocks you could make a 10” square cardboard template to trace around.

  • Step Ten: Add Words

This is the stage when you’ll want to write comments on the Courthouse Steps. First make a paper template and write out your comment. Place this paper under the area where you want to write, so you’ve got something reliable to trace. Use a Sharpie. We’re recommending black ink for continuity.

  • Mail Your Square!
